The free tier never phones home. Ever.
Local users don't exist to us
The free tier makes no network calls — a local-only user is never online, never counted, never known. There's nothing to crack because there's nothing checking.
Only Server Mode validates
Enabling the paid capability exchanges your licence key for a short-lived signed token. The licence service learns a key, a coarse timestamp and a device count — no library data, no filenames, no analytics.
60 days of offline grace
A holiday, an outage, or our servers having a bad week must never lock you out. Past grace, Server Mode pauses; your local library keeps working exactly like the free tier.

What happens when the trial ends?
The desktop stays complete and free, forever. Paired devices stay listed but inactive until you subscribe — and subscribing restores every pairing and setting instantly, with no re-import.
How long will my 8 TB take to encrypt?
Secure Mode rewrites every byte, so a big library is an overnight job you can pause and resume safely. Fast Mode conceals the same collection near-instantly — a 20 GB file takes about 1 MB of reads — and you can upgrade the files that matter most to Secure later.
What if you disappear?
Your password and recovery file work offline today, and the free open-source decryptor shipping at launch reads the documented format without any of our software. Your files outlive us by design.
Why is the family password free?
Because paywalling safety is how privacy brands die. The Family Library and Boss Key are free on the PC; the family's other screens — the TV, the kids' tablet — are simply devices, and devices are what Plus is.
