Obscured Media
The encrypted media player

Encrypt everything. Then just press play.

Obscured Media is a full media player for encrypted files. On disk, your videos, photos and music become locked, unrecognisable objects — yet you still browse real thumbnails, search your collection and just press play. Nothing is ever decrypted back onto your drive. Nothing like it exists.

Encrypted on disk·Ready to play Watching folder … encryption starting

Watch closely: the names become noise on the disk — and every file still plays with a single click, exactly as it did before. That's the whole trick, and nobody else does it.

Just press play
A full media player for encrypted files — you never decrypt anything yourself, and nothing readable lands on your drive
Real thumbnails
Browse your collection visually while every file stays locked on the disk
Invisible encryption
Import a folder and it's done — no vaults to mount, no unlock-and-relock dance
Every screen
Phone, TV, web browser and VR headset — streamed privately from your PC
Free on your PC
Encrypting and playing are free forever on one computer — not a trial
The difference that takes four seconds to verify

Other private players encrypt their database. We encrypt your files.

Keeping a collection private is a two-layer problem. Most "private" players seal their own catalogue — thumbnails, history, ratings — while your actual videos sit on the disk untouched, fully visible to anyone who opens the folder. Obscured Media seals both layers. Check it yourself in Explorer.

Typical “private player” — your disk Readable by anyone
  • Holiday_Compilation_2019.mp4
  • Anniversary_Dinner.mov
  • Concert_Row3_4K.mkv
  • Personal_Journal_003.mp4

The app's own catalogue is encrypted — the files it catalogues are not. Filenames, folders and content stay in the open.

Anonymous objects with random names. Every private detail — including the fact a folder was ever there — lives only inside the encrypted catalogue.

A real media player — not a vault with a viewer bolted on

Everything a player should do. Encrypted the whole time.

Resume where you left off. Hover a card for moving previews. Build playlists, save moments, skip the scenes you never want played. All of it works directly on encrypted files — decoded on the fly, in memory, only while you watch. Your drive never sees a readable copy.

The Obscured Media Full Library: a grid of real video thumbnails with search, filters, ratings and one-click Private play — every file encrypted on disk
The actual app. Real thumbnails, search, ratings, one-click play — while every one of these files sits on the disk as an encrypted, unrecognisable object.
Then watch it anywhere

The library lives on one PC. The watching doesn't.

Turn on your private server and stream over your own network. Every device is approved by you and can be cut off by you — and none of them can ever change or export your library. Nothing touches a cloud.

Meta Quest VR · no other media player even attempts this

Watch in the headset. The PC shows nothing.

Your files stay encrypted on the PC and stream straight into a private cinema in your Quest. No player window on the monitor, no Remote Desktop, no screen mirroring — the computer gives nothing away. To everyone else in the room: a spreadsheet, and someone in a headset.

And when the app is closed?

It can keep serving — with no window at all.

Turn on the optional background service and your library keeps streaming to your devices while the PC just… sits there. No app open, no interface on screen, nothing to explain. Whoever's at the computer sees nothing; whoever's on a device still has to authenticate.

No window, no trace on screen

The desktop app doesn't need to be open — or even started. Your phone, TV or headset simply finds the library, while the monitor shows whatever it was already showing.

Even straight from boot

Choose always-on and the PC serves the moment Windows starts — nobody has to log in at the desk and open anything. Or pick unlock-after-restart if you want one deliberate unlock first.

Invisible ≠ unlocked

Every device still authenticates before a single byte is decrypted. The service is off by default, you enable it deliberately, and turning it off means off.

The Family Library · free

One library. A kid-safe version of it.

Split your collection down a line you draw. You keep your password to everything; the family gets a second password that opens only what you've marked as safe for them. Everything else simply doesn't exist on their side — across search, thumbnails, playlists and every device.

A password just for the kids

Hand the family password over and relax: the child-friendly half of the library is all they can ever see or play. New files stay yours-only until you deliberately add them.

Skip the scene, keep the movie

That one violent or adult scene in an otherwise great film? Drop two markers around it — a couple of clicks and a save — and playback skips it. The kids enjoy the whole movie without ever seeing it, and the file itself is never edited.

Their history is theirs

The family side keeps its own watch history and resume positions, so nobody's viewing leaks into anybody else's — in either direction.

Their password, their half of the library, their movie night — and only what you chose is even there.
Three promises, each one architectural

Not policy. Physics.

01

It never leaves your hardware.

There is no cloud catalogue, no storage service, no upload path. Protected media, private metadata and encrypted thumbnails stay on machines you control — full stop.

Proof: no server exists to receive it. The app works completely offline.

02

You'll never pay to get your files back.

Exact restore to the original path is permanently free, your recovery file works without us — and a free, open-source command-line decryptor for the format ships at launch, so this promise is technically guaranteed, not just made.

Proof: the on-disk format is documented; restore is journalled and verified.

03

We can't see what you keep.

Not "we don't" — we can't. There is no route by which a filename, a thumbnail or a byte of content could reach us. The architecture makes the promise for us.

Proof: zero telemetry, zero accounts, zero network calls in the free tier.

Everything it does

A vault on the bottom. A media centre on top.

Protect

Drop in whole folders and they're encrypted in one action — subtitles and all. Need speed on an enormous library? Fast Mode hides it in seconds. And restore always puts everything back exactly as it was.

How protection works →

Enjoy

Search, tags, ratings, collections, playlists, moving hover previews, saved moments, A–B repeat and per-video skip scenes for a custom cut — without editing a single byte of the file.

The library experience →

Stream & cast

One button starts your private server — it checks your network and firewall for you, then shows a green light. Cast to TVs. Cut off any device instantly, mid-stream.

Streaming & casting →

Carry

Shared Vault enrols a second computer through a mutual ceremony, so protected files on a USB drive open on both machines — while every library and password stays local.

Between computers →

Family Library

A second, optional password that opens only the media you deliberately assigned — with its own history and resume. And a Boss Key: one keystroke mutes, locks and walks away clean.

The second password →

Trust

Fingerprints shown, states truthful, deletion honest about its limits. When certainty isn't possible, it stops safely instead of pretending. Every claim traces to committed test evidence.

The security model →
Simple, honest pricing

US$0 · forever · no card, no clock

Plus

US$29.99 / year · founder lifetime US$99, first 500

We also tell you what it can't do. Fast Mode is concealment, not encryption — Secure Mode is the encryption. Streaming isn't DRM: a device you trust can record what it plays. No software can promise forensic erasure from modern storage, and a compromised computer is outside any local app's protection — including this one. The full list lives on the security page, because in this category, honesty is a feature.

Ten seconds from now, this folder is nobody's business.

One small app. Point it at a folder. The names disappear — and everything still plays.
